Most e-bike buying advice starts with motors and batteries. That is the wrong end. The specification only matters once you know what the bike has to do, and three questions settle that almost completely.
Question 1: Where will the bike live?
This is the question that eliminates the most options, and the one people consider last.
If the bike has to come indoors — up stairs, into a flat, into a hallway — then weight and folded size outrank everything else on the spec sheet. A brilliant bike you cannot get through your front door is a bad bike.
- Carrying it regularly? You need something under about 20 kg. That means a carbon frame like the N1 Air at 15.6 kg, or a small-wheeled folder like the Zip at 19.4 kg.
- Storing it folded but not carrying it? Compare the folded dimensions with your storage space and car boot. A folding frame does not automatically make a heavy bike easy to lift.
- Garage or shed? You may have more flexibility on weight, but still consider moving the bike through doors, parking it and lifting it for maintenance.
Be honest with yourself here. "I'll manage" on delivery day becomes "it lives in the shed and I never use it" by week three.
Question 2: What are you actually riding on?
Not what you imagine riding on. What is between your door and your destination, most days.
Smooth tarmac and cycle paths. Narrow tyres. They roll faster, weigh less and use less battery. A city bike is the right answer and a fat bike is an expensive mistake.
Cobbles, gravel, canal towpaths, badly maintained cycle paths. This is where fat tyres earn their keep. A 3-inch or 4-inch tyre at low pressure does most of what a suspension fork does, and it does it everywhere rather than only at the front wheel.
Sand, snow, deep mud. 4-inch tyres, and accept the weight and rolling resistance that comes with them.
The middle ground is genuinely good: a 3-inch tyre gives you most of the comfort for considerably less drag. If your riding is 80% road and 20% rough, that is where to look.
Question 3: How far, and how hilly?
Distance is the easier half. Hills are what actually catch people out.
On distance
Work out your longest realistic round trip, including detours, and plan a charging reserve. Compare the manufacturer’s test conditions with your route, load and assistance level. A quoted maximum is not a guaranteed commuting distance.
On hills
Motor type matters more than motor power here, and this is the single most useful thing in this guide.
A hub motor drives the wheel without using the bicycle’s chain gears; its delivered torque still varies with speed, control settings and load. A mid-drive motor sits at the cranks and puts its torque through the chain — so when you drop into a low gear, the gearing multiplies it, exactly as it multiplies your own effort.
On flat ground the difference is small. On a sustained 8–10% climb, with luggage, or if you are a heavier rider, it is not subtle. The L20 3.0 Pro (100 Nm mid-drive) and N1 Pro (80 Nm mid-drive) are mid-drive options to compare for routes with sustained climbs. Actual climbing performance depends on gearing, load, traction and riding conditions.
If you live somewhere flat, save the money. If you live somewhere hilly, this is where to spend it.
What a quoted range figure actually means
Range tests differ between models and manufacturers. ENGWE specifies PAS 1, a 75 kg rider and no extra load for the LE20’s quoted range. Compare test conditions before comparing kilometre figures, and allow for your own route and riding style.
There is no single reliable percentage that converts every advertised maximum into your real range. Factors to consider include:
- Temperature. Cold conditions can reduce available range. Follow the battery manual’s temperature limits for riding, storage and charging.
- Hills. Climbing is where the energy goes.
- Tyre pressure. A soft tyre is a permanent brake. This is the one variable entirely under your control, and the one most people ignore.
- Assistance level. Higher assistance generally draws more energy; the difference depends on the bike and route.
If you want to compare two bikes honestly, ignore the kilometres and compare watt-hours: volts × amp-hours. A 48 V 15 Ah pack is 720 Wh. A 36 V 10 Ah pack is 360 Wh. The first holds exactly twice as much energy, whatever the marketing says.
Things worth paying for
- A torque sensor. It measures how hard you push and scales assistance to match, instead of applying a fixed shove whenever the pedals turn. It is the difference between a bike that feels like a bicycle and one that feels like an appliance.
- Hydraulic brakes. On a 30 kg bike in the wet this is a safety feature. Less lever effort, better modulation, far less adjustment.
- A removable battery. If the bike lives outside, you must be able to bring the battery in.
- Compliance documents. Ask for the declaration of conformity for the exact model and supplied configuration. CE marking alone does not prove independent testing. If a third-party certificate is advertised, check its issuer, model coverage and scope.
Things not worth paying for
- Headline wattage. Peak output and maximum continuous rated power are different measurements. The EU type-approval exclusion for ordinary pedal-assist cycles includes a maximum continuous rating of 250 W and specified pedal-assistance cut-off conditions. A peak-power headline alone does not establish road-use status. Check the supplied configuration and national requirements; treat off-road models separately.
- Range you will never use. Compare battery options against your actual route. A spare battery is an option only where the manufacturer supports the exact pack, connector and mounting arrangement.
- Suspension you do not need. Compare comfort, weight and maintenance against your route. A damped saddle may suit some riders, but check mounting compatibility and do not treat it as equivalent to full suspension.
A short decision tree
- Carry it up stairs, ride on roads → N1 Air or Zip
- Store it folded, ride on rough ground → EP-2 Boost or L20 3.0 Boost
- Daily town commute in normal clothes → P275 SE
- Hills, loaded, every day → L20 3.0 Pro or N1 Pro
- Replacing a car → LE20 cargo bike
Check fit before choosing a frame
Use the exact model’s size chart as a starting point. Compare your inseam with the standover and minimum saddle height, then check reach, handlebar position and whether you can mount and stop comfortably. Wheel diameter alone does not establish rider fit.
- Measure storage doors, lifts and folded-bike space before ordering.
- Check the permitted rider and total load limits; luggage and accessories count towards the applicable limits.
- A step-through frame can make mounting easier, but it still needs to fit your riding position.
